| No, that's pushing the product too much. You want the Final coat to be as strong as possible. Just take your time. Only roll about 8" (2 roller lengths) and tip in one direction - top to bottom. Don't put on too much paint. The "final" coat will be the one you like. I went around the Benny 7 times before I quit. If you are getting sags it's because you are putting on too much paint and/or tipping horizontally. Post a picture when you are done. Snow blindness is part of the fun experience of painting a white boat--suck it up .

| just walked in after doing a console 55% reduced. There are about 6 coats on it now, it went on really well. Check it out in the morning, its much easier to not put on too much paint this way! |

| Bought my last brush After a couple of years of painting my hulls with a brush, and trying numerous tricks towards getting it right, I broke down and bought an airbrush- just a cheap HVLP with a 1.2 tip. Yesterday was the best painting day I have ever had. Still not professional, but so easy to put on a light coat, not have any streaks, drips or runs. I totally respect those who are good with a brush, but I am not. Is there a simple way to judge how many coats to spray on in one session? I had to avoid the temptation to keep going- I was getting better with each pass. Thanks, Rob |

| Things that can go wrong with awl grip is when some idiot puts a polish rag back in your new rag bag and you wipe down the boat then spray only to find the paint frying on the boat. What a bloody mess, and what a bloody idiot. Had to get that of my chest. |

| Can you tint Awlgrip? I have some oyster white Awlgrip for my cockpit, is there anything I can use to tint it? I have some evercoat colors I use to tint gel coat. Can they be used? Thanks. |

| I would be reluctant to mix manufactures with this type of product. Awl grip will mix custom colors, or you can buy a small quantity of another color Awl grip and mix that with what you have. Just remember that if you have to patch or repaint you will never be able to match the first application.

| Thanks... That makes sense, unfortunately it sounds expensive since I'm thinking the minimum you can buy in Awlgrip top coat is a quart...correct? I wouldn't need to add very much but I may need to buy a few different colors to get the right tint. (The evercoat is in small (4oz tubes) -I'm sure you're right that it's risky to add anything "not" awlgrip made to the paint. On a separate note, have you used Awlgrip Accelerator? Any thoughts on it? Documentation is saying it allows a re-coat in 4-6 hours. I plan to roll it on the cockpit sole. |

| There are guys at the yard that will not R&T without using an accelerator, because it cuts down on the amount of dust that gets in the paint due to the speed-ed up drying time, but it is very tricky to use and expensive. If you do not have a mentor nearby to help with the mix (drops) I wouldn't use it.

| Question about wetcoating 545 with chromabase? Been working on an automotive project. I have used Awlgrip 545 and Awlgrip highbuild thus far and have Dupont Chromabase for color after the primers. Was curious if I could wet coat the Awl Grip 545 with the Chromabase. A full cure of the 545 would mean more sanding and my time line is getting shorter by the day.... my professional who is not familiar with Awlgrip says cure and sand between the 545 and Chroma. He says this thought because he does not know Awlgrip. Im hoping one of you guys can help me? Thanks Joined your forum after reading the 36 page AwlGrip thread. This place is fun for me.... |

| Been about a week Well TSA, since it's been about long enough, just thought I would welcome you to the forum. To reply to the question, My only experience (and the only one I've ever heard) is that the 545 must dry and be sanded before re coating. After-thought, these materials can be real fickle. They seem to play by a very strict and narrow set of rules. Hope you all the Best Grady

| [quote=tsa1982;272967]Been working on an automotive project. I don't understand why you used 545 at all? You should stay with the compatible coatings. ChromaPremier is a one stage coating, but there are related primers like ChromaSurfacer 7704S it is a high build 2K Urethane Primer-Filler and there are a number of other project specific primers that are made to bond with the other Dupont products. Why are you mixing companies? The dupont Chroma products do not require sanding, but Awl Grip does.

| Use of 3M half mask with organic vapor cartridge Hi all, If I'm going to spray Awlgrip in my backyard homemade spray tent, can I use a 3M full face respirator (6000 series) with an organic vapor cartridge? I plan on spraying with full overall-style suit with hood, gloves, etc. and will change my clothes immediately after exiting. I know alwgrip says to use an air supply system. However, according to OSHA if I use an organic vapor cartridge with dust/mist, I should be ok. http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/isocyanates/mdi/mdi.html According to OSHA they tested 6001 cartridge and 501 filter and it removed 99% of the isocyanate. So before I head off and kill myself, should I be okay with BRAND new cartridges and filters which I'll discard after more than one hours worth of use? |

I tried this when painting a carbon tri. I was using PPG Deltron as a paint system, an auto world product. |
