Simple Boat - Simple needs

Its been a while since I posted here. For the last few months, with new batteries and battery cables (save for ground) My engine will not start after prolonged running - I think it is heat soak as I have experienced this in my 300d before. But after removing the only one year old rebuilt start and new solenoid. I wonder just what is the correct way to do things in regard to:

1. How many grounds should be attached to the block/starter. I had many.

2 Aside from the positive on the big lug on the solenoid should there be any additional ones?

3. I have quite a few hot leads on the battery (previous owner) such as, bilge pump, instruments, battery charger...

4. Does a simple diagram exist for a simple inboard diesel trawler that I can use as a template?

The block serves as central ground. I would prefer a ground rail or terminal stud, connected to the block with a single strap or cable. Less messy and not subjected to moisture and vibration.

On the solenoid there is the positive wire from the battery (or battery switch), the lead from the alternator and the one that feeds the peripherals.
