HELP!!! wiring problems

im having a problem starting my 85 hp johnson too basicaly the wire does from the motor to a metal box {ecu im guessing} and from the metal box it comes out and there is a bunch of wires i dont kno whitch one to connect to make it start i put the grey one wit white and it cranks but it doesnt start there is a thick red with thin white and red stripe together and there is a thin black one anyone HELP????????????????????

It is a magneto ignition. In the off position the power is grounded. Get a wiring diagram with the color for the wires to help you.
