where do i start?

ok here's the situation. i am currently an employee for Silverton marine. i work in the R&D dept. as a tech. i build plugs molds and fabricate fiberglass parts. i also do major assembly of prototype boats. i love the job to a point. i'd like to crossover into the design and engineering aspect of R&D. the question is where do i go for an education to get me in the door. i actually have a degree. a BFA in Illustration. i have a background Art. in my mind the transition doesn't seem far-fetched.

i need some feedback. and help would be appreciated.
