Westlawn or YDS

Hi everyone,

I was set on signing up with Westlawn untill I came across YDS's web site and this one as well. After reading a lot of info on YDS I decided to enroll with them. I like the fact that you can pay as you go and it is 1/4 of the price of Westlawn. I am looking forward to reciving my first lessons. I also ordered the books to read for the first two lessons. I would enjoy hearing the progress of everyone from both schools. I will keep you informed of my status as well.

Stay the course.

Yacht Design School

You can find out about YDS at www.macnaughtongroup.com/school.htm

People frequently mention the cost differential. I think there will always be one but I am concerned that people are too focused on that as a point. Our course is less expensive in part simply because we use the same offices, staff, and equipment for YDS as we do for our design firm MacNaughton Yacht Designs. Westlawn does not have this advantage and simply must charge more. Either school is pretty inexpensive education and you should choose on the basis of which one seems to be the best fit for you, rather than on price.

Sincerely,
Tom MacNaughton

You might want to also consider the quality of instruction at each school. I believe that one of the instructors at Westlawn is also a student on the same course. I am not sure whether this is the case at YDS.

I think the McNaugthon School has at least two advantages over Westlawn:
1) It is run by a practicing yacht design company
2) You can pay "as you go" (and the fees are quite low).

I think McNaughton mention more subjects that I didn't learn at the Norwegian Institute of Technology than Westlawn does...
