University of South Hampton, England

My son is thinking about the Ship Sciences program at the University of South Hampton in England. I'm in the U.S. and so am not familiar with this university. Does anyone have any comments about this program?

Southampton university is very good - it comes in in the top 10 in the UK. But if your son particoularly wants to become a yacht designer or go in to yacht manufacture, i would strongly recomend Southampton solent university, some very good designers have come out of southampton solent (formaly southampton institute). In any case southampton is a nice city to stay in and there is some good sailing near by.

I have an MSc in Naval Architecture from University of Southampton.My theme was Small craft and yacht which this department is mainly concerned.I strongly recommend you to send your son.

In addition to that, Solent University has recently gained the status of university,it was an institute with a low UK ranking until summer 2005.

I was in an offshore oil engineering firm in the UK and had the desk next to a South Hampton grad who had done a yacht oriented degree (at least in part). He was well educated and a good engineer.

I agree with Challenge, Southampton uni is great for naval architecture, but Solent is better for yacht/small craft. The two universities basically have the two best courses around.

Solent tends to appear further down the list of Uni's because of it's other courses. For Yacht and Powercraft Design, it's very good.

i have only ever heard amazing reports of their courses.... i should have gone there, but decided to do automotive design instead!
I am originally form the Southampton area and i can vouch for it as a very nice area indeed, with the New Forest, Isle of wight, great sailing, but it is an expensive area!!!

If you get lucky it's not too expensive.

One tip, if you're living in a house (which you will be in your second year) if you get a good one, stay in it for the third year, and don't let the landlord put the price up. This will be my third year in my house now, and we are still paying (in total) what we were when I moved in.

Halls of residence are pretty similar, but from what Ive heard, the students are a little more restrained at the Uni.
