| Request for project topic Hi everyone I am Master of Science student from university of Strathclyde looking for project topic. I have 2 years production experience in yacht manufacturing company in middle east & 1 year designing experience in ship designing. Can anyone suggest a topic which is relevant to boat designing. I have few software skills like Autocad, Rhino, 3D max, MathCAD & Matlab. Please suggest any suitable topic as soon as possible. Thanks in Advance Prasanth |

| How about tunnel drives on a powerboat that will sit level at low tide. That allows for a wider stern which is always a good selling point.

| I might be able to help clarify things a bit. I pm'd Yerneni to suggest a couple of ideas for projects & the one he expressed interest in was as follows: As he has some experience with production of luxury yachts - http://www.gulfcraftinc.com/ - I suggested that he might consider a "minimalist, bullet-proof" yacht, one that I could take from Vancouver, Canada, to Hawaii, as an example. As I have explained, the vessel would need to meet the first priority of being affordable to the average couple, followed by being capable of anything nature threw it's way. In my mind, I was picturing something along the lines of the smaller Nordhavns. After viewing the afore-mentioned web-site, however, perhaps a trawler yacht would be too traditional a design for Yerneni's tastes. I understand that he has 3 months to complete this project. As my capabilities to design are probably less than his, I'll now sit on the sidelines and learn. I should also mention that I suggested steel as a building material, as that is my own favoured material in construction and I believe it is cheaper to construct in steel than fibreglass. I suggested in a subsequent pm that Yerneni try to be as descriptive as possible in relaying what he wants, in order for the experienced designers to better assist him. I hope this alleviates, rather than adds, to any confusion. Mike |

| I know, Gonzo, I used them as an example of a 40-50 foot, go anywhere type. What I was suggesting to Yerneni was that the lower the price, the larger the market, as long as the design had appeal to most. Perhaps, what I've suggested is impossible & you, or others, may have a more realistic suggestion for Yernani's project . Geez, not expressing my thoughts well, today. Gonzo, aren't the Nordhavn's built in Dana Point, California? Labour costs must be a huge factor in the production costs. Building the same vessels in Asia, or using imported labour in the Middle East would drastically reduce production costs, would it not? I am, presently, having a cliff-side home built next to one of our beaches, in the Southern Philippines. I could certainly not have the same place built in Canada, probably couldn't afford the land these days. In similar fashion, I intend to build a large - 60 foot - Hankinson designed sailboat in The Philippines, because of the cheaper labour. As a steelworker in the shipyards/drydocks of Western Canada, I have watched our industry die, replaced by cheaper labour in Asian yards. I may not like it, but that is reality. Mike |

| Hi Yerneni do you really want a project that designs ONE new thing ? or are you interested in a project which compares the characteristics of lots of "similar" but different existing designs ? the former is more creative, but the latter involves lots of comparison and drawing conclusions. You would need to use hull definition software, do some hydrostatic and perhaps hydrodynamic analysis if the latter is of interest to you - drop me a PM |
