Has anyone looked at the lecture series on naval architecture on youtube by nptelhrd. If so, is it any good? There is a wide range of lecture topics posted.

What is it you wish to learn and in what depth?

Right now I am trying to find out what educational resources are available for learning naval architecture and/or yacht design and how good the programs are.

By the way, just today I found out that Virginia Tech has an online master degree program in ocean engineering. I communicated with the director of the program and the emphasis seems to be ship design, with less emphasis on offshore structures or small craft. However, it seems that it may be possible to do some customization of the program through a mutually agreed upon selection of self study topics. This mechanism could put some small craft training into the program, if that is what someone wanted to do. The director said that the training in their online program is exactly the same as the on-campus master degree program. It is a true calculus based engineering program from a respected university. The online program has been operating for about a decade, and they have had a number of graduates.

You shouldn't fall into the trap that naval architecture degree = big boats, ergo not interesting nor applicable to me.

The degree in naval architecture, is just the start of the apprentiship, it provides you with the first principals approach and foundations to then begin further studying with confidence in the field of your choice, if small boats or yachts up to supertankers.

There is a lot of similarity, except the nuances are subtly different, that’s all. You get a proper in-depth all round education that allows you delve into any field with confidence.

And to be a real professional naval architect/designer...the degree is only the academic part. You still require many years of on the job training to supplement the academic side. You can't escape that simple fact. Just as learning how to use Rhino to draw pretty pictures doesn’t make one an instant boat designer/naval architect.

The Course at Virginia Tech sounds good from what you have said.
