Is Webb that insanely hard? And would is the school's reputation good enough to be worth it? I've been seriously concidering it, because it's in the "area", area being New England.

Yeah I am a Webb Student

If any of you still want a brochure, just email me at sstone06@webb-institute.edu and I can get one sent to you.

Is Webb really as hard as they make it out to be? Sometimes. Its not always hard as much as its just alot. Almost all of the work is "doable," it just may take hours to do it. We take a LOT of classes, with very few that are fluff. It's not for everybody, but if you love boats or just like doing lots of homework, Webb is for you. Plus you can't beat the price ($0)

Also a Webb student (graduating in June)

I have been through most of the Webb curriculum, and yes it is tough. However, if you like boats and are a hard worker, it is very doable. Freshman and Sophmore years you take classes with assignments and tests. Junior year, the focus shifts more to design work. Senior year all your classes are design oriented -- you design an entire ship, from hull and propeller, to structure and machinery. You also have to complete a senior thesis, which allows you to use Webb's facilities (towing tank) to do any kind of research that you find interesting and is pertinant to the marine industry.

Another important factor is the reputation. The Webb reputation, and it's close-knit network of alumni, can help get you into any area of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering that you want.

Plus, the sailing team just got a brand new fleet of 420s!!

I hope this helps, good luck!

I am a student at Webb Institute and I would highly recommend the school. Just in case the web site (webb-institute.edu) did not make it clear, Webb is tuition free, very small (70 students-total-this semester), and very difficult to get into/ stay in. If you have any questions about Webb, please e-mail me.

Naval architectures deal with the hull and structure, and marine engineers deal with propulsion, systems, and inside stuff. The groups must constantly interact to design a vessel.

If you search through google you can find a lot of colleges that are not military related, to name a one: Maine Maritime Academy is one that looks pretty good. Search under "marine engineering schools and colleges" or "maritime colleges and schools" or even "marine mechanic colleges"
