Issue Eight of Westlawn's Free Quarterly Newsletter Posted

Issue eight of Westlawn’s free quarterly newsletter, The Masthead, has just been released. This is our biggest issue ever. (Yes, it’s bigger than our last biggest-ever issue.)

WIN A FREE COPY OF THE NATURE OF BOATS
Simply by clicking through to read the December 2008 Masthead by January 15, 2009, you will be automatically entered in the drawing for a free autographed copy of The Nature of Boats. This 418 page book explains all of the aspects of what makes a boat work, and it is great fun.

Topics in the December 2008 Masthead include:
  • NMRA Scholarship Winners
  • Know It All Winner and new Contest
  • ABYC/Westlawn Joint Continuing Education Program
  • The Yawl Abigail
  • PassageMaker Magazine/Westlawn Trawler Design Contest
  • Westlawn Profiles Yacht Designer Earl Alfaro of Grand Banks
  • Financial Aid for Westlawn
  • Olin Stephens Memoriam
  • Training Links & Events Schedule
  • Technical Article: Quiet Science/Sound Insulation
  • And more . . .
Excerpts from the Tech. Article:

Quiet Science:
"I've been on boats that were so loud-from engine noise alone-I couldn't hear any conversation at less than a shout, and that from no more than a few feet away. When sitting quietly at anchor, many approaching power craft announce their rumbling, buzzing presence from a mile away or more. Tests have conclusively proved that noise of this sort leads to fatigue, ear damage, and even elevated blood pressure. What's more, when you're aboard such a craft you can't hear the waves, the birds, the fish jumping, or any of the other fine things you're supposedly on the water for in the first place. What I'd love to see (and to own) would be a "stealth" boat. I'd like to be able to whizz by at 30 knots-the only audible noise, water whooshing along the hull. Though a true "stealth" boat is theoretically possible, it would be a complex undertaking. "

Read the entire tech article in this issue of The Masthead and learn the "Quiet Science."
