International School of Yacht Engineering in June 2011

For details, please visit http://isye.ing.unibo.it/

The School contains 9 thematic week-ends with topics listed below:

W1 Yacht Design
This course is an introduction to principles of nautical architecture and refers to the following areas of expertise:
• Hydrostatics (trim & stability)
• Hydrodynamics (resistance and powering, seakeeping, manoeuvring)
• Arrangements (concept design, volume & access)
• Structures (global strength, seaway responses)
• Construction (cutting, rolling and welding technology, launching).

W2 Yacht Design: architecture
This section is focused on nautical architecture. Special international laws and dimensioning tip and tricks for common components both in sail boats and in motorboats are illustrated.

W3 Yacht Design: internals
Internal boat design, space study and distribution criteria, ergonomics and aesthetics are treated during the lessons.

W4 Yacht Design: performance prediction
In this set of lessons the most important tools to predict in the early design stage the yacht performance in every working conditions is presented and demostrated. This tools are nowadays crucial for a good project not only in competitions, but also for cruising and power saving pourpose.

W5 Sails
The wind force allows the change of the boat direction and speed so it is important to be able to design and manufacture sails considering all the technical aspects connected with fluid dynamics and aerodynamics principles and to realize them in the best material and shape to take advantage of any wind condition. The course will focus these aspects transferring to students all basic elements to design and manufacture sails.

W6 Motor boats
This is an introductory course addressing the fundamentals of marine propulsion prime-movers, propulsion systems and associated auxiliary machinery and systems. Diesel, gas turbines and steam propulsion plants will be addressed as well as the required fluid support systems, transmission systems and basic control systems. Students will be expected to apply knowledge of the engineering sciences (fluid dynamics, heat transfer, strength of materials and thermodynamics) to the analysis of marine power plants and to acquire the basic necessary skills to design and built a propulsion system, considering the whole nautical structure and the required performance.

W7 Structure analysis
This section is dedicated to important simulation tools, like FEM, or Virtual Prototyping, used to virtually test structure strenght. Finite Element Method is commonly used in traditional materials (fiberglass) and composite materials to reduce weights and increase the yacht performances.

W8 Yacht production
Nautical structure is focused on hull structural proportioning: (loads, structures design and dimensioning, strength tests) and construction methodologies. Innovative methodologies and techniques as FEM are used to verify structural stresses and strains and to properly design the structure.
Causes and consequences of mechanical vibrations are also examined during the course and vibration analysis and testing techniques, dynamic balancing and vibration isolation methods used in marine applications are presented.

W9 Yacht and shipyard management

Final test:
Stage in nautical companies (5 available for 3 months)

This course looks absolutely great, two thinks, can go beginners in here, or is only for absolutely experience people.
Best regards

"ISYE 2011 has been delayed to winter 2012 - more details on new schedule will be available in next months."

That's what the page says now. Perhaps the number of partecipants was insufficient to form a class?
