| Within UK: At Southampton you also have Southampton Institute at www.solent.ac.uk They offer (among other courses) a BEng Yacht & Powercraft Design. Or did you include this with the Wolfson Unit?

| "At Southampton you also have Southampton Institute at www.solent.ac.uk They offer (among other courses) a BEng Yacht & Powercraft Design. Or did you include this with the Wolfson Unit?" I have Southampton Institute School of Marine and Coastal Studies at www.solent.ac.uk/maritime, but is there another degree program that I missed? I get confused, so can you tell me the relationship between Southampton Institute and the Wolfson Unit and what degree programs are available? Thank you, Steve Hollister |

| >>Southampton Institute and the Wolfson Unit In the city of Southampton there are two main Universities: "Southampton Institute" and "University of Southamtpon". You also have something called Wolfson Unit, which is based in the University of Southampton, where they do wind tests for example. But they use the towing tank at the Southampton Institute. Each of them offeres different degrees; for example at the "University of Southampton" you have a Master in Boat Design, at Wolfson you have some research degrees, etc. I don't know what courses they offer right now, because they change quite often, so they might offer something new this year, and they might have cancelled another courses. They most famous course is the one offer at the Southampton Institute, where you study BEng Yacht & Powercraft Design. If you want, I'll have a look and make a list of the available courses within this week.

| Thank you for the quick reply. Now I understand the relationship between the three better. I will look some more, but do you have a web address for Southampton Institute's BEng Yacht & Powercraft Design program? Thank you again. |

| http://www.solent.ac.uk/maritime/YPD.htm - but there's not a whole lot of info. The undergraduate list at http://www.solent.ac.uk/maritime/undergrad_course.html includes Yacht and Powercraft Design and Yacht Manufacturing and Surveying. |

| Also I noticed you should remove the 'index.html' part from the link to the University of Southampton in your list as it results in an error not found. |

| classic or space-boat hello fellow boat nuts! im sorry that my first post will be a bit of a question rather than a contribution. allso im sure it is a tired subject. " what distance learning school to go to"westlawn or macnoughton? i have been fighting this for about three years now. i recognize a lot of the names on the board so i trust your input. 1) macnoughton i see uses mostly older books in there course, most i have owned for years (chapelle, sucher, gardner and the like)if completing there course will i have the design skills to compete with the likes of steve seaton and the new space boat designers? please understand that if i had 1.6 mil i would buy a northern marine 64lrc "a seaton space boat" 2) westlawn on the other hand provides its own text. will i be handicapped if i turn in lines for that classic livaboard tug we all love? or a chesapeke bay buy boat? 3) i can not find any info on the instructors or board of directors for the macnoughton school, westlawn has names who i own there books and read the ink off the pages. could this be the basis for the more than double price tag of westlawn? you usaually do get what you pay for. just a note to you all i have been studying classic lines since i was 10 when my dad explained how to expand the transome of a whitehall on a napkin one morning. i would imagine that my someday firm will shy on the classic side but in order to pay bills i must have the skills to please all tastes. i thank you all for your time! 8kts |

| Reading through this FAQ: http://www.macnaughtongroup.com/freq..._questions.htm I got the sense that the macnaughton school was primarily taught by Thomas A. MacNaughton - or at least since no other instructors were mentioned that the major direction and idealogy would be set by Tom. I'm sure other designers probably critique the work though. If you happen to ask them, I would be interested to hear the answer also. |

| Northern Marine LRC 64 In reference to your call for more of the lrc 64 I fell in love with this boat from the cover of PASSAGEMAKER magazine (summer 1998 issue) the first and most famous of the model is (SPIRIT OF ZOPILOTE) a very much covered boat in the trawler yacht world. She is based on a proven DELTA MARINE hull in my book she is a boat that has no competition in style or performance (pure eye candy) i could go on and on! if you like modern styled trawlers get the back issue, the $7.00 or so is money well spent. when i say "space boat" i simply mean 21st century designs or say 1995 and beyond. Thank you by the way for the link! i will search around the web and find some links on ZOPILOTE. |
