Boat Building Courses

I'm coming up to the end of a 3 year undergrade course and although i want to do a MSc i think id like some time away and am considering a boat building course for a year before i go onto an MSc. The two I'm looking at are the long course at the Lyme Regis boat building academy(http://www.boatbuildingacademy.com/c...longcourse.htm ) and the Practical Boat building at the International Boat Building Training Colledge (http://www.ibtc.co.uk/courses/ ) in Lowesoft. They both take a similar amount of time seem to cover very similar topics.

I was wondering if anyone had any experiecne with either of these courses or schools?

Hi, I was on the 10 month long course at the BBA in 07. This year I start studying for a degree in Yacht Production at the Solent University. I would definitely recommend this course, I stayed on site above the workshop. It felt like being a part of a family at the BBA. Tutors are brilliant, location is beautiful. Some brilliant little pubs, shops and good fishing right on its doorstep. If theres anything you would like to know pm me.

Hi, I am also looking at both of these courses (the BBA and the ibtc) - accomodation wise, I have a partner, do you know if the BBA can help find accomodation for couples, also do you know anything about funding available for these courses?

Hi All,

I visted the BBA last week and have now applied. I was really impressed with the set up and all of the staff were really friendly and helpful. They made me feel welcome even before I had applied.

I'm just finishing a similar course in plymouth. Have really enjoyed but it's time for somthing a bit more practical rather than lots of theory. I Suppose I'm doing the opposite way round to you. Good luck with it. Did you build your own boat or help with the others?

I'm in the same situation as you with a partener who will move with me. They seemed to have lots of contacts who are able to provide accomodation and seemed very willing to help find a place. If you can get in contact and go and see the school you can discuss with them. I wouldnt leave it too late though i was told to get my forms in quick. I would also have liked to go and see the ibtc but its too far away.

Cheers all,

Chris
