| Weell I know I said Yanmar are crap but now I got the issues under control , Ille tell yer they start by just putting the key in the hole. They are giving gobs of power and do the job perfectly I have not replaced anything not even an impellor over 7 years,--I got 4 spares. Things might have been different if I had lived in Aus where the engineer could come and see. Even if it is a Toyota I can use Toyota spares then!!!! The Land cruiser 1 HD 6 cylinder diesel is still known as a ball kicker in 4 wheel drive vehicles. Geezuz Frosty is such a wanker complaining about Yanmar now he loves them. Ha-- Beat yer to it!! |

| Not-so , - - I would have said, "Frosty, you should have called this thread - 'Toyota/Yanmar marine conversion engine is great... but service support is frickin NOT good enough' - ..." - - - - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() For being so "self effacing" and "non-arrogant", I tried to award you some points but Jeff, it seems, has disabled my generosity - - - "You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Frosty again."

| Yanmar vs. Volvo I understand your frustration with your engine. Here are some facts-
The ratio is about 6,000 to 66,000 searchers per month. Or to put it another way there are ten guys trying to fix a Volvo for every guy fixing a Yanmar. Also after working in a Yanmar/Volvo dealership I can tell you it was always easier to get warranty replacements on Yanmar than Volvo. Regards Scott |

Your facts are a bit off. My guess for the global marine leisure market is: Volvo Penta 35% Yanmar 25% CAT, Cummins, MAN, MTU and others 40% If I google hits for November 2009: Yanmar Trouble Shooting: 38,000 Volvo Trouble Shooting: 209,000 In this search there are some lawn tractors in the Yanmar numbers and the majority of the Volvo hits are for Cars, trucks, front end loaders, etc. etc. If I instead Google "Volvo Penta Trouble Shooting" I get 13,500 hits for November 2009. Or to put it another way: With less Yanmar products in the field there are three guys trying to fix a Yanmar for every guy fixing a Volvo Penta. Karl2 |

| LOL, I generally respect Volvo engineering but in the world of commercial working boats that I am somewhat aquainted with, the concensus is the Swede's are too damn proud of their spare parts.

| If we are judging engines by the price of spare parts then Yanmar should be given a slot. They could win too,--easy. |

| One thought on the google results. If the majority are late model electronic engines only the certified dealers can work on them as a user cannot get the info from the factory. So presumably the owners dont google as they know its useless. Some of the kit you can buy will let you check faults bit you cant fix them or reset. Its even in the commercial world now as tier II gensets are around. Its fly a technician to the vessel while the onboard engineers stand by and watch the guy plug his equipment in and then to the internet for the answers. Same for outboards. The computer is proprietery data so you are not going to get access to it. Unless the aftermarket makes computers and then gets all the EPA/IMO/EU certification...is that going to happen???

I had an old Volvo Penta in my moter sailer at the time and was looking for a relacement due to its age and that it was raw water cooled. I ended up buying a Westerbeke as it was a better fit than what Volvo offered, giving me better access to work on it. |

| So dont buy them then, I certainly won't buy such a marine engine. Gets really hard as the world law makers are sold on the global warming HOAX and its they who decide what a new boat gets , not reality, usefullness , economy , reliability. FF |

| I dont think you have a choice any more unless you want to marinise your own diesel
