Dont know..trial and error. Remember that when you start your engine the alternators will load up and drag your rpm down.

Tropicalbuilder - I have a Yanmar 110hp 4JH4-HTE. I don't recall the number off the top of my head, but I'm going out to the boat tomorrow and I'll confirm from my notes. I had to adjust idle on my engine last year and I got the factory acceptable idle range from Mack Boring. Let me pull my notes up and I'll get you the answer as it applies to my engine.

OK, found my notes. My engine was set to idle at 800 RPM and Mack Boring said the specs allowed for plus or minus 25 RPMs. Not sure what engine you have, but that was for a 4JH4-HTE. Good luck.
