Why don't you jury rig up a temporary supply of fuel and use some fresh stuff from the gas station and see if it still smells of rubber, may even clear up your smoke issue.

Had another test today, the smell was gone. Apparently, the problem has solved itself. I'll never know where it came from, though. Thanks again all.

I have experienced an old 1-cyl Yanmar (HSE iirc) running on 100% bio and you would usually immediately get a mental picture of deep-fried donuts from the smell of the exhaust. But it depends on what the stuff was that was turned into a bio diesel.

We have a boat with an old but good condition 1GM that develops similar symptoms you mention after running at idle speed or very light load for longer periods, but they are gone immediately after more diesel is injected. You might also have a worn injector?

SALLY I don't know if you are aware of this but this engine was used in various small cars and light commercial vehicles ,normally aspirated and turboed There is a wealth of information available on the various owner's forums, much more than is available on the marine websites ,marinisation was just a matter of heat exchanger and manifold ,so most of the information is still is relevant. Google Austin /Rover Maestro /Montego /diesel owners forum.

Well, I've should have thought of this earlier, because in the 1980-ies, I was sales & Marketing manager for British Leyland Belgium and I had a hard time trying to convince our dealers to sell more Maestro's and Allegro's. So I' very aware of the Perkins engines that sat in these fine cars. Good advice Anthony, I cannot believe I did not think of this myself...

Well I never thought I would see the expression ,"fine cars " and Maestros and Allegros {Montegos] in the same sentence .You must have been one helluva good marketing manager. The fact is the engine was far too good for the car, but it works well in boats and series Landrovers.
