Hunting v16 detriot 2 stroke 71 series Hi all ,I have just bought a 75 foot cruiser and one of my big girls was hunting on rev down.I ajusted the govner srew that brings up the slack in the linkage and it seems to have fixed it. She is running like a dream.Have I just masked a problem or is this the way to fix hunting the manual says it could be fuel rack.It seems like ajusting a fuel rack on a V16 might be a little beyond my skills. There is so much power that it is hard to tell if both are running the same. They use the same amount of fuel so I assume they are running together well.I am in love with these engines and want to look after them .They have only 600 hour each from full rebuild. The sound they make is amazing. Sorry for going on but they are impressive.

Running the rack is not difficult and should be done with a valve adjustment, aftger the injector height is set.. You MUST!! have the proper "pin" a tool that lets you set the injector properly. Under $20 at the DD store. Take the engine serial number to purchase the pin , there is more than one length. A long bar too manually/slowly turn the engine allows the timing to be set properly. Obtain a printed set of instructions is a must. They use valve timing of other cylinders to know when the one you are working on is at TDC. YOU MUST ONLY USE 2 STROKE OIL in these engines.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Shell Rotella T is CF-II classed , it must be on the oil pail. FF

Get the injector number, on a small round tag on the injector, to obtain the right pin tool.

problem solved at last Thanks FF the engine is running like a dream the hunting has stopped altogether. After bringing it to temp and getting a navy mate of mine to look at it he said there is to much give in the govner and screwed it another 1/8 of a turn and it completly went. He said not to ajust the rack it is perfect. I learnt the hard way about using wrong oil in these engine .I put 40 grade in and it was like water and the engine leaked oil everwhere.I then replaced it with the correct 2 stroke 50 grade and no leaks good presure no alarms. 900 rmp 11 kts 50 ltr per hour both engins including 35 kva brush genset with ford 4 cylinder running. This I am told is good for those engines .

I believe 40wt is still the oil specified by DD Leaks are not a viscosity problem , they are a maint problem. Whatever wt. the CFII is REQUIRED!!! To decide on the rack adjustment , simply purchase new valve cover gaskets , and remove the valve covers. Moving one end of the rack a bit should have all the injectors start to move together , and reach full at the same time. "50 ltr per hour both engines," would be 25 liters per engine , maybe 4 to 5 GPH. Since at best these engines produce 16 HP from a gallon of fuel, you are way way underloaded . I would suggest a full throttle experiment , to see what RPM you reach , and then running 300 rpm below that for 10-15 minuets every few hours. With a full throttle burn of 1.5 to 2gph PER CYLINDER !your fuel bill will go up, but the maint. bills will go down. FF

Yes we are running those engines way under load .We do run them up every hour or so to stop them glazing up. It has a max emergency rpm of 2400 but 1500 rpm is cruising. The 50 weight was recomened by Mobile Australia it has made a differance to oil consumtion. Maybe the oil that was in it was old .I have no idea why but it is a mystery. The both of them could not be running better at the moment touch wood.

I suggest you start an oil sample program NOW , with the DD lab. Underloaded is probably the most severe duty for a diesel, so have the lab call the oil changes. I also suggest NEVER EVER EVER!!!to run over 2100 RPM. A 2400 RPM number is for lifesaving , like a fire truck, where the engine will be instantly replaced . FF
