| No, only for monos. Wolfson unit has a multihull module to Windesign VPP. http://www.wumtia.soton.ac.uk/pricelist.html

| There is a VPP module in the Maxsurf suite of software. It is called SPAN (Sailing Performance ANalysis) and is based on the published IMS VPP. See http://www.formsys.com/maxsurf/msproducts/span It produces polars etc |

| Of those mentioned so far, only BoatExpress appears to be within reach of anyone not running a full design house. ORC is subscription-based, 500 euros a year, and seems to be designed for yachts that are covered by a particular set of race rating rules. (Does anyone know if it works well for boats well outside the normal race rating envelopes, or if it's still any good after the 1-year subscription expires?) If I'm not mistaken SPAN can be relatively economical, but is really meant to be part of the Maxsurf suite... which, again, can get pretty pricey as you load it up. (Being IMS-based, I'm not sure how well it can handle multis and other out-of-the-norm designs- can anyone clarify?) Wolfson WinDesign, at GBP 2500, is worth more than my car. Surely, there must be more VPPs out there that are versatile, affordable, or (wishful thinking) both. I know a lot of designers have custom in-house code that they don't release, but surely there is more commercially available stuff out there....

| The Wolfson VPP is very good. They do a lot of consulting/testing and use this 'database' as their inputs. So significant validation and confidence with the program. |

The software ypu are evaluating must have the full sail plan polar including the sail plan driving forces under various heeling positions. Also the various resistance forces must be known at the different velocity and heeling angle. Than the VPP module may iterate to find equilibrium when a specific wind speed /direction is applied to the sail plan creating boat velocity (influencing wind speed/direction) heeling moment, resistances forces. After many iterations, an equilibrium is found and you have one point on the polar chart. BoatExpress has these various functions and the graphs showing the variations of these forces. From many hundreds of users I found that the one problem of BoatExpress is the fact that it was written with outdated tools under window 3.1. Remember that I am a non professional programmer but I am rewriting it. BoatExpress has a sound fondation. I am working to keep it alive. BoatExpress 2.0 in 2012 is possible. chinese quote: The rowing arms are a bit tired but the sea is alive. |

| Yes you are right that Span is based on the IMS so you can't use it for multi-hulls. Although it reads data from the Maxsurf or Rhino hull surface, you can in fact use it standalone and just enter in all the key parameters. |

| Here is a Free site of VPP on line: input your data, output your VPP polar curves (monohulls): http://www.polardesigner.org/#app=58...electedIndex=0 jSDN, from Humberto Martínez Barberá, can make VPP polar curves for Multihulls, you must to ask for prizes. Demo evaluation version lets you play with some examples: http://www.jsdn.es/jSDN/en/mainframe.html |
