Turn 2D Catamaran into 3D

Hello,

I have a complete set of 2D drawing of a 16.5m sailing catamaran.
All frames, GA, mast, bulkheads, sections etc
I have access to 3D software, but cannot draw in 3D.

Can someone turn my drawing into 3D?

Thanks

Spiv what 3d software do you have and are you talking complete model or hull and deck only. Also is this for construction or visualization.

hy spiv,

do u want to create 3d design of construction of ur boat? or the GA in 3d?
if u have Rhinoceros 4 then it will be very easy for u to do the 3D desin. First work for u will be to produce 3d hull shape of ur boat using offset or Lines . then just draw using taking the dimensions from GA. and for rendering u can use V-ray.

u can post a picture of the GA here.. if it is simple and need little time .. i can hv a try.

Thanks

Hi guys, thank you for taking the time to answer.

We have Catia at work, additionally my son is an architect and he has all sort of CAD software, but no time to design for his old man….
I have the whole file in Rhino4, but I can export the file in any format.
I can draw in 2D, tried to turn it into 3D, lost a few nights sleep, got frustrated and gave up!.
I just have the hull and rigging, basic interior, still working on it.
I thought with a 3D drawing I could 'visualize' it better and finish the interior.

My boat builder only needs 2D and I have enough drawings for him to make the boat.

I can do it. Either in Rhino or with other packages at work- SW, Pro E.

What do you want out of the 3D model? Structure
How soon do you need it and what were you thinking about compensation?

thanks.

Stefano do you have the hull as a 3d model in rhino or is that what you are after, so you can do the interior. If its only for visualization with ball park accuracy I could whip up the bones of it for you pretty quickly. Rhino4 is good for me.

Thank you all, this is really a great community.

My Rhino file has grown a lot (10+MB) with various copies and reiterations (10) of the design. Exporting it in dxf makes it even bigger.

In the next few days I will clean it and only leave the latest frames, plans and sections.
Everything is drawn in the 'Top' viewport.
For someone who knows how to shift the frames (every 500mm) from where they are in the 'Top' viewport onto the keel and then extruding the hull surface should not be very hard.

In my case, I tried several times and got nowhere but in frustration island....
I attach some screen shots.

Stefano rather than sending a lot of stuff just now, start with a line drawing of plan, profile and sections (every 2nd section will do starting at 0 ) plus grid with spacing measurement.

I want to thank all that have so kindly offered help, it is really appreciated.

I now have enough 2D drawing to get the 3D design started, but because of proprietary consideration, I am reluctant to post the CAD data on the forum; I am happy to send the data privately, providing the recipient respects the copyright.

As a way to say thank you, I am offering a fully catered 7 days cruise for two on the cat to the person that makes the best 3D drawing.
All you have to do is get to the boat (either Thailand or Australia once she is ready in about 1year).

Anybody interested, please send me a private message or an email.
