| Question Hello, I have a question. I know there are lots of threads with these questions but am confused on the answer. I want to design a small boat with my son for a school project. Can I use Autocad? Should I use Inventor? Rhino? I have Autocad experience so I would prefer that if possible. Obviously I know I can design anything on Autocad but I want to 3d model a rendering and transfer to a cnc and cut a plug. What should I use? Inventor alone? Autocad alone? Rhino? I know it is a newbie question but I figured this was the place to ask. Thanks Andy |

| What level of school is it? Is he being graded on it or is it extra-curricular? Is it his school project or yours? If you do all that on his project would that be tantamount to cheating? What are the project rules?

| ScarabSS you might find it easier to work with a piece of software that knows you are designing a boat rather than anything else. You can get free programmes like freeship that are easy and quick to learn if you already have some Cad experience. From there you can take it into other programmes to get what else you want from that model (cutting files). I find it is better to play to the strengths of different software rather than trying to make things work with one. |

| agree with Teddy... sounds like childish ! if it is mandatory to use software,, use Autocad as u know it.learn only rendering which is easy too..

| I also agree with Teddy. My previous questions still stand unanswered, though.

| The project is not to be graded. It is an educational project. The children are homeschooled and we are part of some large homeschooling groups and there was an interest. As far as whose project it is it is "ours". Thanks for the info. Andy |

| How big a boat are you planning to design?

| Get a pad of graph paper. It will be very useful to you.

| I have to ask... are you being sarcastic? Seems so. I assure you, things have been drawn out. The point is to learn the software with 3d modeling and so forth. If you have no real input than sarcastic remarks, your departure from the thread would be appreciated. If I am wrong, I apologise. Andy |

It is more portable when out in workshop, much easier than lugging around a pc(this statement was a little sarcastic humor). I mean no harm. My suggestions are genuine. Furthermore, there was no indication in your earlier posts that you had progressed that far with paper sketches having already been made. Bye bye.

| Well then I apologise. We have drafts and sketckes and play with stuff all of the time. I wanted to expose them to computer graphic design early and do some projects. Thanks for the help. Andy |

| Agree with bhnautica and recommend the FreeShip if the cad drawing is what's essential. With Search button you can find here in the forums a lot useful info of it.. I wasn't joking about the pen 'n paper BR Teddy |

| new question. i have a PT linesplan but its 27m and i was needed to create a 23.9m maxsurf 3D drawing. should i draw it at 27m first and rescale it using maxsurf or rescale the offsets then draw? which is the smarter thing to do? |
