Does anyone know where I can find 3D models of outboard engine (file format preferably in Rhino or IGES)?

I have all of merc's engines on file but they are 2d :-( I too have been looking for 3D models but no luck so far.

There was a similar discussion some time ago. I subitted a TouchCAD generated outboard somewhere but I ave no idea wher it is now.

I typically use a basic shape that I modify parametrically. Nothing fancy though, probably not more than half an hour of modeling time in TouchCAD per model.

It would certainly be nice to have such models. Perhaps some really smart marketing guy at one of the engine companies will realize that he can simply take the 3D CAD files that they use to make the engine casings in the first place, take out the details, and post them on the corporate website for all of us to use.... The level of detail in Claes's pic above is all I'd want for anything except a final magazine-ad rendering of my boat; all the critical dimensions too of course.

Any engine-company employees here who want to take this idea up? Please?

I could not agree more - I usually have no problem getting 2D files from mfctrs but they never come up with the 3D - presumably this is a copyright concern on their part but all we would usually need is the exterior shell for rendering purposes....

For the most part, it does not have to be all that detailed unless you explicitly want it to look like a particular brand or model. Most likely though, the viewer will spend a lot more time looking at the boat and only note that is is an outboard on it. In the image, the outboard was inserted without any modifications. Would anyone actually think much of it if I did not point it out?

Texture mapping can often add enough detailing and brand identity to make it work.

In my case using TouchCAD, I typically use the basic outboard shape and simply tweak it a bit. Almost all outboards have the same basic layout so it is mostly a question of adjusting the proportions. If I have access to a 2D drawing or image, I simply import it and use it as a guide, so even generating a full line of 3D models for a given brand would not take long.

I do not think any engine manufacturer will give out their designs. Maybe a contracted boat manufacturer could have it for promotion of new concepts. I think you have to do it yourself in Rhino like on attached picture .

Sounds like for now we'll just have to sketch surface models around the 2D drawings we can get....
If I were an engine maker I'd be more than happy to offer 3D models of my motors. Something tells me that seeing a Merc engine on the back of a pretty concept boat, instead of a grey box, would make a Merc dealer quite happy. But i digress....

Ok, if its a "pretty" concept boat but I think their a little afried showing their engines on back of a grey box
Engine on pictured boat are based on a Merc 150 Optimax but have conversion covers to suit boatdesign better.
