Rhino will do shadows, though you will need a surface for the shadow to be on. Waves, wakes etc. you'll need to put in yourself.

Also, look at Pov-RAY for raytracing, it is a very good bit of kit.

A lot of people will use a modeler like Rhino (www.rhino3d.com) along with a renderer like Flamingo and then composite the image with a real photo (including waves) in something like photoshop

This sort of thing is easy to do with Rhino and Flamingo.

Water surface can be rough (waveletts ) but not a real sea state.

Good for prospective clients to see how different options will appear. Lots of control over colours clouds etc.

Cheers

I like the Rhino/Flamingo combination, personally. Not totally photographic, but close enough to play with.

That's a serious bit of art. I can see some time both in setting up and in rendering.
How do you do the flag?

SD, that's beautiful, both the boat and the rendering!

I read so much about V-ray these days.
Do you know how it is to work with in Rhino, compared to Flamingo?

Raggi, Mike,
Thanks for the compliments - always gratefully received.
The flag - a painful, time-consuming piece of work, but ultimately very effective. The country can be changed at will, since it is only a decal in Flamingo. The actual surface, to spare anyone else the pain, is attached. Enjoy!
As far as V-ray is concerned, I have to admit that until Flamingo stops doing what I want, I probably won't even look at it. It is a bit like buying a new car; you know you SHOULD, but the old one still gets you to work.....

Thanks for the flag!
I agree with you on the car metaphor, I drive a Ford Mondeo 97 and have no plans of upgrading :-)

Check out some of the work done by '3dviz' at www.3dviz.com. Actual wake and sea shots with rendered models placed on the shot. We have tried it in Rhino w/ Flamingo and it is very effective. I believe they are using 3dMax for rendering but I wouldn't swear to it.

PS I have nothing to do with 3dviz, other then admiring their work. Not intended as a pitch for the company.

V-Ray is top of the line, and flamingo is not even close to the quality you can achieved with V-Ray or Brazil even Maxwell.

But for what most of us use and need at least IMO flamingo should do the trick there are other renders like POV or BMRT or 3Delight (all are free) which are supported by rhino (Rhinoman), they all work great once you learn to use it, you will have very good renderings (high rendering time) but amazing results for free. all inside rhino
