DrawOrder in AutoCAD

I'm having troubles with the "Draworder" command in AutoCAD (2004).
When I move and object - be it a line, polyline, hatched area, or whatever to the back it disappears altogether when I view it in a layout.
Enabling the linetype generation of polylines in the properties palette sort of seems to fix things for them (but not always!?!) but I'm completely in the dark about the others.
And as usual, searching the Help files is of less help than trying to figure it out myself!

Will, I tried to reproduce this behaviour in AutoCAD 2005, without luck.
There is a system variable, LAYOUTREGENCTL, that controls regeneration of viewports when you switch layouts. Try changing it, it can be 0, 1 or 2.
Does the command REGENALL help?
Have your run page setup on the layout and marked the option "Display plot styles"?

As you understand, I have no idea :-)
