Does everyone buy software direct from the author/company?

With most software you can get a cheaper price buying from mega software stores than buying it direct from microsoft, etc., etc. But it seems all yacht design software is sold direct or through dealers which all charge the same price. Is this correct, that there's no use in looking around for the best deal?
