Building your own design can be very rewarding. But I agree, it's not always cost effective.
I am with Martijn on this one. I have spent many enjoyable hours with French curves and straight edge designing 3 boats for myself and 2 for friends of mine, and though they were not large or complex, the experience was very rewarding, especially when they became tangible creations made of metal and wood.
