| If you click View >> Scientific in Windows Calculator, you get a bunch more functions, including higher (but not complex) roots. Will have to check out those sites. Cool.

StianM -- Here's a couple of tricks. Most people have easy access to Google (at least you do't have to remember where you saved it). In Google search, type sqrt(55) and press enter. Google replies sqrt(55) = 7.41619849 Google calculator does some pretty amazing stuff. For example, in problems of combinatorics you can calculate combinations by typing in Google the question 37 choose 4 and Google responds 37 choose 4 = 66,045. Pretty neat, eh? The next refers to Windows calculator and square roots. The square root of a number is the same as the number raised to the power of .5, so in the Windows calculator you can type in 55, then press x^y, type in .5, then press =. The calculator shows 7.416198487... which can be confirmed with Google Likewise a cube root can be calculated using x^y followed by .33333 (choose your degree of precision). So, in reality -- the Windows calculator is pretty powerful. It's just that it was written by a bunch of geeks. Hope that helps.

The easiest way is to check the INV box. 10^2 becomes the square root of 10, X^Y becomes whatever root you need... simple. This is of course under the scientific calculator. A quick example...the 4th root of 16 = (Inv) 16 * {x^y} 4 = 2...2^4=16 Guess that makes me a geek ![]() Betcha never noticed that little check box

lewisboats - "Betcha never noticed that little check box" No I didn't -- at least never used it. I don't like that they clear it after each calc though. Those geeks at MS ... they really crack me up. I was surprised to see the '*' in your equation ... some legacy languages coming through? ![]()

StianM - "I just don't use google for political reasons." \political rant I can sympathize. They're starting to become useful idiots in American politics as well. Look at it this way -- their revenue model is such that they don't make a cent unless you click on their sponsored links. The calculator is free -- you can simply eat up their bandwidth and they make nothing. /political rant
