Unlike aviation...there is no regulation regarding designing for you own personal use. Once built...the boat would normally have to be inspected to ensure you have the required safety items and that any built in fuel and engine systems meet required specifications for venting. Even though you are in Canada...
Download this and it will give you a really good idea of what you need to design and build to. Make sure to check with Canadian authorities to see if it covers everything for you .

You will need some kind of .pdf reader and it is best if you save a copy on your harddrive.

when you have your boat on carene then save as an XYZ file and import into freeship ...not Delftship as only in freeship can you develop plates ( tools icon ) and print them out with all the measurements on them ... Uk no good for a 18ft speedboat ..north sea rough ..weather cold

Thanks, that helps, I got carene and Delftship, I was not aware of the advantages of freeship... On the other hand, I think the Canadian Great Lakes are ideal for a 18ft speedboat, (in the summer).

AutoCAD

Hello. Actually, I'm beginner in marine design. I would like to know. What are the main points/reasons when designer use AutoCAD, after working in 3D software such as Maxsurf or AutoShip.
Thanks

Some of the stuff on this thread is amazing to say the least, is it a competition or can the software do what it is you need it to do, or more to the point do you know what it is you really require from the software?

AutoCAD??

I have seen it mentioned a couple times but no responses to the question? Is there a fundemental reason why its not even on the list? I am assuming its the price. But - just beginning to dabble in boat design (personal fantasy) and have used AutoCAD for years.... Cant get it to "Shell" my 3D solid / hull for the life of me... many approaches I wont list here but nothing seems to be working... Inventor same results (both Autodesk products- vastly different tho). My conclusion is there is something fundementally missing in AutoCAD these contestants may have? Thoughts??? How is SolidWorks???

Hi Trent:
I also had AutoCAD and similar troubles.
When I was recommended Rhino, I found a tool that was just the right thing for me. It was very easy to learn to operate it. And looking into the statistics above, I seem to be no exception.
Meanwhile finished a couple of projects drawn with rhino and - guess what - they all float correctly

@santoo:
it depends on what type of work you intend to do. A single software will not offer you the complete solution making boat design. Maxsurf and rhino are popular. But it doesn't necessarily mean that those will suits for you too !
Free!ship as its free , much popular one too.
So, try to know your work and then get the right software , which one you feel easy and effective for you !
and i think , better if u start with Rhino first.
