AutoCAD in Ship Design and Building

Which of these desktops are suitable for ship design;
1. AutoCAD2000 Architectural
2. AutoCAD2000 Mechanical

Both include a few useful features beyond those available in AutoCad alone, but I believe neither is the *best* tool for the task at hand. Not to say that many people don't use AutoCad in ship design, but I believe that many of the specialized marine design applications offer better features for ship design, especially for the hull development and 3d fairing process. Are there other reasons that you want to use AutoCad for this?

In most cases you need a specialized program for fairing and hull surface definition and a general purpose CAD system for actual drafting/detailing, plus possibly other software such as GHS, MAESTRO, etc. for calulations. For example, I use ShipCAM (which runs outside Acad) for most fairing and similar specialized tasks and CADLink (which runs inside Acad) for structural work. The latter is basically the same idea as ACAD2000 Architectural or Mechanical, but specifically for boats and ships.

Have a look at TRIBON M1 which is a specialised software for ship design and modelling of HULL, PIPE, CABLE etc...etc...

check out MultiSurf, 30 day evaluation CD available. AeroHydro.Com. The canadian Auto*-firm is just a former licensee from the John Letcher.
MultiSurf is impresive. You can not design a boat/ ship/yacht with AutoCAD, AutoCAD etc. is a drafting program. You are interested in 3D surface modeling. Probably generating CNC code for cutting parts, not some paper plot.
So what you need is a serious surface modeler, whit special fairing and hydrostatic functions.
If you're interest is just hobby and you are willing to start the model all over again after a small modification,(say, extra volume in tehaft part of the hull), check out Rhino. It is like Maxsurf: just Nurbs. Rhino is user friendly, but Relational Geometry is the path to succes.
Nupas, Tribon, CadLink/Albacore, Mastership is production preparation software. AutoCAD is old, but every one uses it, compare poststamps.
My favorite 3D solid modeling software is SolidWorks, no not SolidEdge.
General drafting software for shopdrawings?: IntelliCAD, CADopia.com. It is for free or $99,- with goodies and is as good as Acad R14. (Just a look-a-like formely from Visio? Nice example from the fact that selling cost money too, so now it is for free.)
Most (Auto)CAD drawings people make, could made as well with QuickCAD, yes from AutoDesk. Nice software for the price, the former Drafix Engine? File import export garantueed for less than 100 bottles of beer

If you are just interested in making nice pictures and movies, have a look at Blender

there is a product that is like an aoutocad plug in called ship constructor, don't know much about it thought I got a demo and haven't had time to try it out.
