| How to determine the frame spacing for deck cargo barge using ABS Steel barge rule? I can not find which chapter that specifically guide to calculate and determine the frame spacing. Any advice out there? Help me, I'm a newbies. Thank you |

| ABS will not determine frame spacing for you. That is your decision to make. You must make sure the frame spacing you choose is sufficient for the strenth of the primary, secondary, and tertiary structure. This depends on whether the boat is longitudinally or transversly framed. Lots of decisions, and it's an iterative process.

| Start with a vessel size and an estimate of the deck load. Choose a deck plating thickness. Choose the minimum plating span between stiffeners and decide how your vessel will be framed. Design your supporting structure . For example ; 8mm plate with flat bar longitudinals 400mm apart with transverse frames 1.2m apart and two girders running between bulkheads and two pillars under each girder. Or something similar. As Patrick (Booker) said it's an iterative process.

| To Booker: Thanks sir. I'm doing the scantling calculation and structure drawing for the 120'x40'x10' Deck Cargo Barge. I try to make my own design from zero. Using Maxsurf Pro software and manual calculation to get the actual and required section modulus. To MikeJohns: How to actually estimate the deck load sir? For the size of my deck cargo barge, what should the deck load be? By the way, thanks a ton to both of you for helping me on this sir. Really-really appreciated. |

| So is this a student exercise ? Look at your change in displacement. Your maximum barge load is dictated by your minimum freeboard.

| To MikeJohns: No sir. It just a project of my own. So, the displacement change with draft right? But I quite not understand about the maximum barge load dictated by minimum freeboard. Is it the loadline/freeboard calculations? Ouh, sorry, I get it sir. Thanks. The minimum freeboard of course. But for the initial, I took 75% from the moulded depth. Is it OK? |

| That depends on your requirements. Is there enough reserve buoyancy to deck edge immersion for the stability required. That depends on the freeboard and the cargo-stowage . Just a thought, You need enough well fendered topside exposed. Look at what height the tugs are happy pushing around.

| see old rules, iam not sure, but i think that "in the past" ABS Rules took into account the length of the vessel for the determination of the frame spacing, normally between 550 and 650 mm and not greater than 760mm. |
