| Yacht mast/hull info Hope you can help. I have designed a new lightweight 100 metre mast and need to know the ideal length/width of a mono hull to suit. The weight of the (steel) mast will be around 4 tonnes. Any advice would be very much appreciated. With thanks, Davo Last edited by Davo : 09-11-2003 at 07:13 AM. |

| Davo, You really need to do this in reverse - draw the boat first, then (and only then) are you in a position to engineer the mast. The strength of any stick depends entirely on the righting moment of the hull beneath it. and mast weight affects the righting moment. You get the picture? ;-) Steve |

| Davo, For a comparison, a recent catamaran mast that I spec-ed was 27m high, 12" x 6" section, inertias were 160 in^4 x 35 in^4, and weighed in at 10 lb/ft in aluminium. Hopefully that will give you some comparison to work with. On a monohull, you would expect this mast to be on something about 70ft, light-displacement (not ultra-light) and built for any weather.
