I'm trying to figure out what kind of boats I'm seeing on this photo:
    http://terryking.us/china/ShekouDeepBayBoats.jpg

The boat with the arrow towards it is 48 feet long according to the Google Earth ruler, and it's about 2 carlengths so that's somewhere near.

The curved building in the upper right is the new High School where my wife is designing a new Library / Media Center. We will be moving there in August, and I AM going to get something on the water there! I'm kicking myself around the block for just spending 3 years on the Mediterranean, BoatLess!

The Lat/Long is on the photo if you can play with GoogleEarth.

This used to be a small fishing village 20 years ago.. now see the high-rises!

If anyone has been in the area (Hong Kong), this is over in Deep Bay, at Shekou, near Shenzhen.

There are hundreds of some kinds of boats of 30 to 60 feet rafted up all over this area, looking under-employed. I hope.

    Any pointers or ideas appreciated!!

    Pix of Boats

Only someone who knows what types of boats are typical around Hong Kong would be able to have a decent guess about these boats. I'm hoping such a person is on these forums!

Right now, I'm in North Africa and the only views I have of that area in China are Google Earth and a few photos from the school which don't show any boats. I have quite a few photos of boats in China but I don't know where they are from, and they're mostly picturesque Junks with tourists or boat people panoramas.

I could just wait until I get there in August, but Jeezum Crow (That's VermontSpeak) I'm gettin' itchy. You ever had a Boat Itch??

    And I'm not 90, only 70.

Jeezum, that USED to sound so old :p

    Boatbuilding for the Deaf??

Longliner, I can't find much about this, and I had not heard of it before. Here is a one-page reference in Leisure Boating Magazine, which is from Zaire:

You might be able to contact the magazine at:
    http://www.leisureboating.co.za/default.asp
but there doesn't seem to be much there online.
Let us know if you find out more.

The boats in Africa are incredibly varied, and often very colorful. Here's a pointer to an early-morning boat launch I saw in Ngor, Senegal:

I thought it was really interesting how they have adapted their wooden longboats for outboards by splitting the "Tail". These guys bombed out thru pretty heavy waves with hardly a bounce.

Some more photos: What Are These??

OK, I have found a couple of photos at water level (See the satellite photo pointer at the beginning of the thread)..

Has anyone been in China/Asia and seen boats like these?? Any information/pointers appreciated.

AND: What are those "Outboard" motors?? Seem to have a right-angle drive with top-mounted motor with integral rudder.. Are these used a a rudder when under sail??

I think this is REALLY going to be different!!

I should think the ones in the google photos are trading junks - 45 to 85 feet long and traditionally moved stuff from larger ships in Hong Kong on to smaller businesses and communities along the coast. Trade in the area works on many levels: You have the most sophisticated container ports handling the world's largest ships, you have smaller ships being dealt with by tugs and barges, and then a whole raft of trading being done in these junks, including people and goods smuggling. The Hong Kong based junks traditionally had Gardner Engines with ex bus company 6LXs being particularly prized after each had already been used in two generations of buses. There were similar sized junks that also fished further offshore. There were even some coastal trading sailing junks still working 20 years ago, but I should think they have now given way to 'progress'.

The other pictures are of sanpans. There are a number of entirely water based people (Hakka) whose families live and work (fish) entirely on these inshore boats. I don't remember these outdrives, but perhaps these are from further up the delta where they might take the bottom at low water.

I have kept boats in Hong kong many years . I have never seen those drives before. They must be from Macau.

The bridge in the back ground looks like Macau and the M on the fishing boat number could be M for Macau??????

The channel under the Macau bridge is shallow and you will need a police escort to enter, ( normal).

The raising shallow draft drives could be for that reason?

The tv antena are UHF China does not have UHF only VHF ---im only joking. Well about the antenas.

I think your right there Jack, looks like Macau to me, style of Junk too! Mind you it was some time ago I was there last! My guess is the 'outboards' are variations on a theme of whats some times known as 'Z' drive - engine on deck/in cabin (horizontal) with a geared / chain running down to the prop inside the tube! I've seen that style elsewhere out there with a more horizontal shaft but never that steep. Obviously works! (used to be good for smuggling in your neck of the woods Jack, well OK more down to Indonesia then!)

    Sure. Tell me about it...

Please tell me more about splashvision.. I now am living in that place! So I know a lot more. See more recent photos at:
    http://www.terryking.us/photoalbum/main.php?g2_itemId=2603
...and go down to the BOATS album.

I still have a lot to learn about these boats, and some of it is delayed a bit while I try to cram some Mandarin  I need a little more detail than Zaoshang Hao!
