Want to build a barge about 20foot.

Hi all, I want to build a barge about 20 foot long, And about 8 foot wide.
Would anyone be able to help out with some plans or ideas?
I live on a lake in NZ. And would like to have something different on the lake.
Cheers for now.

Hi 8liner,

Would this be for cargo, vehicles, or drunken partiers? (How much weight?)

And do you need any kind of speed out of this, or can it just putter around at 5 knots?

There are a few approaches to small barges- box, pontoon, etc.- and which is right for you depends on what you plan to do with it.

I have a Tri- toon that I built a alum. type house boat on the deck. I do commercial refrigeration work so I used alum walk-in cooler panels and boxed in my cabin, they are light and strong. I can use the top for a upper deck, no problem walking on. I put sliding glass thermopain doors on the front, and it was easy to cut my windows and side doors where I wanted them. The panels go up easy and they dont have to be new, easy to paint and the stryrofoam adds floatation. Small a/c when hooked up to shore power and easy to heat. 20 ft. and on my trailer, float on and off. The walk in cooler panels are easy to work with check it out...Ed

Building a barge.

Hi all.
The barge would be use for carrying a ride on lawnmower to a job, And a timber to build jetties in the lake.
When not using for work, It would be come a family boat, And a party boat/fishing.
Weight: no more than 1000 kg.
Speed: Not really worried.(be able drink more if going slow)
Thanks to all.

Glenn,
I know of a 25 foot by 10 foot barge that makes 5 knots with an eight horse four stroke. Check out "Brandy Bar" in the May/June 1989 issue of Mother Earth News. It's an easy build from 2X6's and 3/4" plywood. Too wide for a street legal trailer in North America though and heavier than 1000 kg probably.
Tom.

Check the "ute" in the 4m section at www.platealloy.com if this is no good try

www.specmar.com.au I'm sure they can deal with a local NZ company to arrange cutting.
