Volvo Penta Challenge HELP!

I find myself somewhat overwhelmed, with no help in sight. Is there anyone who can answer this question, or does anyone know someone who could? I destroyed my 270 volvo penta outdrive, (new captian) just to discover this was more expensive than the boat itself. After doing research I have found a 280 upper and want to know if it will replace the 270 upper I destroyed, as well the lower unit was not damaged and I need to know if it will pair up properly with the upper 280 unit. I have a chevy 350 engine and I also destroyed the bell housing, the mechanic said I need new bell housing and something else associated with that unit, What was that? If I could pass on some questioins to an authority in this area it would be greatly appreciated.
