| With Hyd steering a hidden bypass might work. For mechanical steering a REMOVABLE part , say a collar that fit between the rudder post and quadrant that can be carried ashore would disable the vessel till they machined a new piece. Many boats have eyes on the rudder to limit movement , instead of 35deg 0deg and a padlock might slow em down. As a NYC live aboard the Burgalarmist , a 12v delayed 15 sec alarm system works fine , but you need a good vacume to clean up the Mace , and you will smell a trace for months. The 12v fence shocker from Sears has been on my boat since the mid 60's and wired to the stanchons , bare life lines and bow pulpit and aluminum dink has served well. JC Whitney has a CB style alarm that can have quite good range with a mast top antenna 4 or 5 miles. FAST FRED , recovering New Yorker |

If you also had a servo activated sea cock that opened after the EBRIB had been on for 3-4 hours, it would be a distress situation for the thief. When contacted by the authorities, about a possible false EBRIB signal, you could truthfully state that the boat is sinking and if it is at sea, it is stolen. The simple padlock on the steering would be a good deterrent, other boats would be easier to steal.

| Epirb! Yes epirb is good! Remote activate epirb is actually a really good idea - the theoves would get a LOT more attention than they wanted! So- remotely switch on their epirb and then watch the authorities nick em for false alarm as WELl as stealing the boat! Heck I like that, - you know, probably the penatly for deliberately activating a epirb when not in distress, might be higher than for stealing the boat so- to see em get the double whammy would be very entertaining indeed! For anyones interested, I bought myself a 'boat bandit' alarm device yesterday for the boat which I will have installed and then report in more detail on! In fairness tho - I am an agent for them, so take any 'positive' comments I make with due caution! (that I may have a fiscal gain motivation!) Heres a photo of whats inside the box when it arrives! I've ascertained that it can track (via GPS / GSM network) your vessel, and even remotely disable it (if it's a power vessel...hence the reason for this thread!) via your mobile phone!. Theres lots it can do, which I will report in full on at a later stage when I've had a chance to properly trial it under real conditions! My plan is tohave these units installed in vessels that I monitor for security purposes - so that I can trackthem if stolen, intercept and remotely disable, while feeding the relevant authorities the details of where tolocate the stolen vessle and bad guys in charge of it! My biggest worry is in protecting valuable sailing craft. Should one of these get away from the canals where I patrol, to the open ocean - I have only limited time and fuel range with which to intercept the vessel - before it sails out of GSM coverage area and out ranges my fuel capacity to give chase...so the necessity to be able to remotely "disable" a sailing vessel becomes obvious! Cheers! |
