Upholstry

I'm new to the forum, my father just gave me his 20' wellcraft open-bow and my frineds and I on our off time from college and work are trying to re-upholster the inside, We would really appreciate any information on the cheapest way to redo the seats, im guessing vinyl but we dont know if theres a specific type of padding or wood for backing to use. were poor students but were trying to make the boat as nice as possible. any help would be appreciated. thanks

There are several kinds of seat vinyl. The stuff sold for cars and campers has a fuzzy felt-like backing. This will rot or mildew in a boat. Marine seat vinyl has a waterproof backing and will last a LOT longer. Typical weights are 28-40 oz/sq.yd., heavier is better. Tip- Use a leather needle and an industrial sewing machine. You can stitch this stuff on some of the beefier home sewing machines, but it will definitely jam the flimsy weekend-dressmakers' type.
Padding- High density open-cell foams are the most common choice. The higher the density, the more comfortable it will be when the boat is pounding around in waves. There are some mildew-resistant marine foams, if you feel the extra $$ is worth the slightly longer life.
Backing- Regular AC exterior plywood, coated with fibreglass resin, is popular. There are more durable polyboards available too, but they are more expensive.
