Tug liveaboard design wanted.

Design Intent.

1. To set world record on square footage per construction costs ratio.
2. Tug style ocean liveaboard aluminum barge 36’.

I dream to have liveaboard coastal cruiser. But I am mechanical engineer, thus have no budget for it
So, I am trying to get sail-away barge.
Will do-it-yourself as much as I can. Will collaborate on design, drawings, welding, installation, purchasing etc to help make it possible.
CAD 3D model in SolidWorks is done on lunch break. This is not a “must be” but suggestion to prospective designer.

Have a look at http://www.cmdboats.com/trailertrawler28.htm It is not a live aboard but a stout little coastal cruiser for the home builder and or budjet minded.

Location: Conn in summers , Ortona FL in winter , with big dock & room for O'nite stop .
With all that area foward the boat might be a BEAST at any anchorage ,
merrily sailing to & fro from the huge fwd surface area.

Deck house in rear solves the problem with out the need for two anchors every stop.

Commercial boats are ordinarily tied to a dock , when out of service , so having crank anchoring problems does not bother them.

A used on deck power pod for self propelled barges , with lowerable drive would be cheap (NOISY inless boxed) and could run acc systems as needed.

Are we talking tug or barge? Or anything likely to max the space per dollar? There are plenty of designs to get ideas from. I would suggest looking at Reuel Parker's web site: http://www.parker-marine.com/parker2_1.htm The Scow 33 and Sanpan 36 give some idea of the accomodation possible at your size. Phil Bolger has designed some boats to the purpose of being cheap for their accomodation. Unfortunately he does not have a web site, but some googling may be productive. Most of his boats are narrower for their length which means they can use a smaller engine. That may be a worthwhile tradeoff. You would be looking for the Solution 48,Loose Moose, Liveaboard Scow Schooner, and the "State" series of power sharpies: Idaho, Dakota, etc.

For overall expense, it would be hard to build for what it costs to buy something used.

Ocean Barge 33 - liveaboard

After reading all public and private messages I’ve changed concept to ocean going barge:
New design intent:

1. Ocean coastal cruising barge 33’ – liveaboard.
2. Capable to achieve 7 knots with 150 miles range and survive average storm in open ocean.
3. Material: aluminum, or fiberglass, or steel.
4. Sailaway level of completion.

Will post formal request for design/construction proposal in 4 weeks.
Concept drawings are attached.
3D model is available in CAD formats.

Why build it ?

The Krogen Manatee is a pleasure barge with max room AND some resale value.

It might survive in the Ocean storm , although the occupants would need to be strapped down as it tumbles in the big waves!

Why?? Because I am manufacturing engineer, and believe in building sailaway 33' barge for 20K
Krogen Manatee barges are 20(!!!) times more expensive

Most Krogen Manaties advertised here in SW Florida are $100,000 US ASKING.

At 2000+ man hours to build a modest boat with interior , plus an engine , drive train and some materials for the interior & hull and a huge time spent sandblasting and blowing on 7 coats of paint inside & out , it might look cheap.

Hace you done a cost & time spreadsheet for the COMPLETE vessel?

If used, than yes. But new will cost more than 200k.
Send my link on 100k.
