you will need to go asian
sampans, 5 board plank boats and their delvelopments
the yamaha designed panga would be one for examaple

the recent "long tail" motor fitted to the twin ended sailing fishing fleet of the last 200 odd years, maybe what he means
but i reckon there would be a rich history of craft dating back to the 2000 year old 5 plank i put up
