I have a strong preference for analytical tools rather than empirical. My hull shapes got a whole lot better once I started using Michlet. It is a CFD tool available free here:
http://www.cyberiad.net/michlet.htm

Take the time to read enough of the manual to work out how to enter data and then play around with the software to understand it. I expect it will give better results than the empirical approach. That is certainly my experience.

It interfaces well with Delftship or Freeship if you want too draw up hulls. There are free versions of this software as well.
