| Silence is Golden I keep reading of the "advances" in electric for boats, , Only $30,000.00 for an Efficent propulsion setup of 8 hp! Am wondering why all this tallent doesn't do something more usefull? The newest Boise headphones cancell a good deal of noise electrically. There was talk of Electrically quieter mufflers, but I think Harley bought the patent and uses it to make theit antiques even noiser. So where are the advances in quieting an engine room , Electrically? Planning on a new boat , paying extra for light weight construction , and the best I can do to muffle the diesel is 2lb sq ft LEAD from Soundown? A good (but heavy ) muffler system can be had by specifying "Hospital Critical" for the muffler , but what about the Diesel Din? Hopefully, FAST FRED |

| shhhhhh....... They have noise cancelling cabins in aircraft so the technology is out there. I'm not sure what the db output would need to be, but judging from modern car stereos, that wouldn't be a problem either. You may have just created a niche market for somebody....

| What need to be quieten down is the producer of the noise, in this case the diesel internal combustion engine.The next step is to insulate the engine room to adsorb the noise.This technology is in the market and they are not as steep a price as the electrically driven 8 hp engine that you had mention earlier. If the exhaust gas are de superheat with water injection, the term here is wet exhaust I believe, there is possibility to drop the noise decibel to very low level. |

| "The next step is to insulate the engine room to adsorb the noise." right , but at 2 lbs per sq ft the weight of the quieting material will be substantail. 100sq ft doesn't line a very large box , and thats 200lbs!! We are shooting for an 8000 lb 39 ft aluminum boat (7 ft beam). I know the new electric injected diesel engines are far quieter , but I worry about a lightning strike (in Florida) and rowing home . __________________ No GPS, no compass, no charts, no visibilty past 50 feet, radio recieves but doesn't transmit, cruising speed is 4 knots... yeah, sure skipper, a 3 mile run through rocks and shipping lanes shouldn't be a problem. |

| In my reading about fast boats the early steamers were the only game in town ,but the machinery was heavy as was the fuel. Im sure a powerfull steam engine could be made , and would be as quiet as in yesteryear , but the steam generators was also huge. I read about the swells that get distilled water and pump it to 30,000 psi so when sprayed thru a special nozel it evaporates instantly, cooling an OPEN aft deck. In reverse I would expect water that finely atomised to absorb heat as rapidly. If true a steam supply could be an oil burner blowing down a pipe , with the fancy nozzel spraying away and superheated steam coming out. Silence would be easy !! FAST FRED |

No problem (so you need a wee bit of lead to shield the reactor but that shouldn't be too much off a problem to all the experts on this forum) Far fetched, not really works on nuclear submarines (well it did on the first few, dunno about the present beasts) ![]() |
