Sailboat Design project - lake use

There appears to be little if any curvature in any of the panels; this would likely result in a boat that flexes when it shouldn't, and if built heavily to be rigid, would be too heavy for reasonably good performance. There's a lot of interesting style in the design, though. As is, it might make a good model for an illustration in a first class fantasy novel. With its panels curved slightly, it might be made rigid enough to take out on the lake for a test run.

Matt - I am currently designing my future house. It could be there has been some leakage between the interior walls of my brain LOL

Mcollins - I think I am slowly starting to realize that yes, I have two opposed desires here and if I want to get my family on the water better to go with a proven, stable, straight forward existing boat. That being said I guess I've got two projects now, and I can see how they could both become long term pursuits. The only drawback I see to that is to my budget. HhahAH.

In regards to how I came up with this I just started drawing and sketching and cutting and taping and talking with a few people who have very basic knowledge of sailing in general. I started with a smaller model out of paper then did the larger one out of cardboard. Sounds to me like I need to download and become familiar with freeship. I've no experience with this program however it appears to be quite helpful. Gotta love freeware! Looks like I've got tonight’s plans figured out. sweet!

Narwhal thank you for pointing that out. When I do the next design step I was planning on working some more curves into it for this purpose. The sides are slightly more curved then they appear here but I am going to increase that a little as well as making the top have a slight oval to it. Thanks for the compliment regarding the aesthetics of the design.!

I'm doing a bit of editing while thinking about the trimaran concept. Im beginning to come to terms with the realities of building this at the size that I was daydreaming about it and It most definitely would be a very long term project. Not one that I'm afraid of though. I just have alot of learning to do. Sounds fun.

You are drawing and modeling fantasy boats. They have some features that are vaguely suggestive of sampans or junks with a hint of currah. If you enjoy that kind of thing then you should continue that harmless pursuit. If, on the other hand you actually intend to build such a boat, then you are very much on the wrong side of practicality.

Before you involve yourself with Freeship or Delft you should study some of the basics. You can start with some books. I suggest: The Nature of Boats, by Dave Gerr. along with Skenes Elements Of Yacht Design. These are cheap, informative, and necessary starter references.

Your pix show a model with a "lizard lip" bow. That will make sail positioning more than merely problematic. It will have a profound influence on manuverability as well. Study some geometry that relates to displacement volume and trim characteristics. Your designs have a debilitating amount of wetted surface and then there are structural considerations as mentioned by another respondent.

This is not intended to rain on your parade but you should get the books and learn about some of the realities of boat design. Mere artwork has a strong potential for getting you drowned.
