| If I were you, I'd register on this forum, then browse the more active threads. You'll be surprised how much you learn. On the reading matter front, have you read LARS LARSSON's PRINCIPLES OF YACHT DESIGN. It is clearly laid out, and really quite easy to understand. Good Luck, Tim B. |

| Pricey for softbound, but "Sailing Yacht Design-Theory" and "Sailing Yacht Design-Practice", edited by Claughton, Wellicome & Shenoi, describe the current state of the art. Not as immediately applicable as Larson & Eliason, however. Marchaj's "Sail Performance", "Seaworthiness - The Forgotten Factor", "Aerohydrodynamics of Sailing" and the older "Sailing Theory and Practice" are classics on the scientific principles. Another classic along the lines of "Skene's" is Chapelle's "Yacht Designing and Planning". "Offshore Yachts" by the Technical Committee of the Cruising Club of America (edited by John Rousmaniere, published by Norton) has more valuable info for designing offshore cruisers. A must-have is Ian Nicholson's "Boat Data Book", published by Sheridan House. Brion Toss' "The Complete Rigger's Apprentice" (McGraw Hill) also has details on rig design. As does "Sail Power" by Wallace Ross (Knopf). Nicholson's "Improve Your Own Boat" and Ferenc Mate' "From a Bare Hull" are also good sources of detail design info. Dashew's "Surviving the Storm" (Beowulf), Adlard Coles' "Heavy Weather Sailing" (McGraw Hill), Victor Shane's "Drag Device Data Base" (PAI), and Marchaj's "Seaworthiness - The Forgotten Factor"have good info on extreme conditions. Nigel Calder's "Marine Diesel Engines" has info on diesel selection and installation. "The Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction" has engineering info on designing for wood construction, including techniques like cold molding and tortured plywood. For engineering info on composite materials and construction, see Eric Greene's "Marine Composites" - available from DavisCoLtd, or read it online at http://www.marinecomposites.com/. |
