Russell Mcnab design

Hi there,

Looking around the internet I got stabbed by the sharp bow of a 28ft Russell Mcnab design...and I felt in love...

The only information I found was on this forum and the thread was about 4 years old.

It's seems like an Origami design. is that right?
Anyone knows if it is more a backyard than a professional boat to build?

 

Sharp indeed.....I assume you are inquiring about Caravel?

She's an attractive vessel at a glance, I have no idea if any were ever built. I don't think the shape is possible in steel, at least not without considerable fighting to bend plates.

Her form is a full length hard chine vee bottom with no mention of origami (folded) plate. I would assume the intention is plate over frames, which is the method for the plywood version.

 

I had the impression it was plywood - I thought it looked great too when I saw it, so I sent away for the study plans.

At least one was started, and ended in a TV news program about a major problem between Russell (the builder) and the purchaser.

Sorry for the late reply,There were one for sale in Queensland just google: Russell mc nab 28ft.
It is mentionned Steel hull and this is partly why i am interested in this design.I also figured out that there is a pocket cruiser book about but cost $90 on Amazon! Do you still have the study plans?

No I did'nt buy it.

I 'll wait until the new owners decide to straighten up the guard rails and change the sail plan because the mast is a bit on the way for such small boat...maybe with a bit of luck they'll think they're not up to this but they'll keep the fridge! This is when I'm gonna show up!

The picture on the haul out confused me about the construction method. There is a chine which seems to disapear so that's why I thought it was an origami.

 

Fair enough. The 'disappearing chine' was inherent in the ply wood version as well - a preferred design feature.

 

We have a steel Russell McNab "Caravelle" ~Possibly the only one built in Australia - moored at Cygnet, Tasmania -
built in 1985, we are the third owners of this pretty 27' vessel.
Dimensions, 27' x 8'2" x 4

As we have downsized to a smaller yacht, this unique vessel is now for sale.

Have posted a photo as there seems to be some interest in what
the finished boat looks like
