Three cheers for John. Messing around with boats, whether in the shipyard or on the water is what every reader of Boat design net does. . Escort the know it alls and pessimists back to their bar stools, then grab your tape measure and ......... Keep up the good work.

I would agree with that if we didn't have to spend large sums of money and risks other people's lives to rescue unprepared would-be sailors.

My modest proposal to alleviate (not cure) this has always been that you have insurance and an EPIRB, and people come looking for you at need, or you have neither, take your chances and nobody looks for you. I am quite happy for people to risk their lives doing stupid things provided we don't have to bail them out from the foreseeable consequences.

Same with people who want to ride motorcycles sans helmet. No problem, sign this organ donor card and waiver of treatment for head injuries first.

After nine pages in this thread I think the answers have been very reasonable. The unreasonable is the emotional stigma some seem to attach here. I makes me think there is an underlying project after all.

I think the answers about money are right on the money, pun intended. Gonzo is right as is Ad Hoc and Par. Saving money is the absolute worst critenrion anyone can go into a refit project with. If that is in the picture then the project is a big waste of time. Since about the early 80's you can always buy a used functional boat cheaper than any conversion no matter how good of a scrounger you are. Can't buy used up front but could put in money over time into a project. Then you can save over time and buy the used boat and actually be ahead even working at Wal Mart part time to save up the funds. Working at Wal Mart at minimum wage is money ahead in the long run.

The only valid reasons to refit a project is the project itself and that is it. I have little respect for those folks who stubbornly think they will save money and value their time at zero. If a person values their time at zero, I value their wisdom about the same.

Viking North if you don't take the tight budget out of the equation then you are going to pretty much get the good and professional answers to reverse engineering the hypothetical boat project. Those answers are on the first page. Abandonment due to budget is extremely valid in your scenario and no one would be wise to proceed further. That is reality.

Now there is nothing in my post that is a personal attack or meant to dis in any way. Its just reality. Now dropping the budget stuff entirely will produce something more of the kind of discussion you and in mind and more on the lines of where Tad has tried to go. You are right, he understands the jist of the conversation you were trying to gin up even though he tried to nix it on cost. Not a bad try at starting the conversation you wanted but you threw in the tight budget and got the correct but unwanted answers.

I tried to convert and old troop ship 36' life boat back in the early 80's I had about $8k into the project and about 800 or so hours in. At that point I had a much better idea of what was involved and sat down and did some figuring. I figured the project would take me another 1500 hours or so and another $12k to finish. My original budget was the hull plus $3.5k. I figured the boat would be worth about $15k to $20k max. Being steel I had already figured out it would be hard to keep it from rusting through. At that point I bit the bullet and parted it out for $5k. My tuition on the project was $3k and 40 credit hours in the school of hard knocks.

PDWILEY: If you use and EPIRB, people are forced to look for you. It shouldn't be a fall back option for lack or poor planning.
Scunthrop: What the hell dude, where do those insults come from?

First, Pierre welcome to the thread, Second this is not my regular response to the past two days, still analizing the posts. but if it makes some people feel more at ease to drop the money factor and i mean drop it totally, MR.X is so dam rich he just wants to play with the concept. I say this so the process continues and is not shut down by forget it it is too expensive at which point alot of good info ends and the hull in conversion or completion is never taken to it's full potential, whatever that may be, it doesn't matter as long as it creates a discussion of learning. Conversion in this thread starts with a given hull form that has a good potential to be reasonably successful. It eliminates pages and pages of counter discussion on what to start with, this is it, what are the steps, give me the magic numbers, basically what do they mean, and more important once given how do i maximize their info into an actual 3 dimensional build. Hey many of us old farts have never done this. Many architects/designers have never transformed their paper drawings into an actual hands on build and many builders have never actually built from a set of professional drawings. It is not always an easy thing to do. Hopefully thru this process we can trade info on how to do this and once this make believe build is over I will present a real conversion build, live show fully open to your posts, i am confident you won't be too dissapointed with what i've chosed to convert, not perfect but not bad.Geo.

Viking North: Those two propositions-a tight budget and an unlimited one-will give very different ideas and create different discussions. Within a budget, the reality of cost will make the project unreasonable for most. Without taking a budget into consideration, we would only discuss the technical aspects. In the latter case, it would be mostly a matter of implementing solutions which just takes time and money.
