You may want to reconsider the daggerboard idea for rowing. The ability to push with one oar and pull with the other can make for excellent manouverability. Eliminating the daggerboard also allows you to come in sideways to a dock, swimstep, etc.

Just discovered this forum. What computer program are you using for the design of the rowing shell?

The hull was modelled on a very old version of Multisurf LT

Unless you intend to carry a passenger in the stern I recommend reducing the prismatic to about .53 by making the stern finer. No reason for CB/CG to be more than about 53% aft. I recommend using Michlet to optimise:
www.cyberiad.net/michlet.htm

Having said that, it looks nice, and I'm sure will turn out fine whether you take my advice or not.

Thanks Stephen - your advice is most welcome....I'll fine up the stern sections a bit. I kept them fairly broad in order to achieve greater stability than is typical of skulls, but I take your point...
The design is in the very early stages still - and I'm in the midst of selling my house - so I mightn't have anywhere to build it soon!

It should be possible to build your boat at under 30# ( 14kg ??) using wood srtips/cloth/epoxy.

Even at that weight it should stand a lot of abuse.

HI Will,
just come across this forum .
Nice design, I notice that you have updated to some of the suggestions, Have you got any further.
Its now some months into 004 and perhaps you have already finished.
I am also contemplating building a recreational row boat , have gone as far as getting the plans of a 16ft 7 inch whitehall from Mystic sea port, the boat was built about 1870 beam 42 inch with a sliding seat. , definately not a traditional working whitehall. how ever your desing has got me thinking.
I built a cosine wherry ( now stolen ) using strip plank, did'nt suite me I found the cedar tooo springy. and it needed a lot of filling to fair properly am interested about your foam core idea.
Mike

Hi Mike
I'd like to tell you that construction is well underway - alas my (68 yr old!) mother - for whom the skull was to be built - went out and bought one! Built of GRP and somewhat shorter but heavier than my proposal......
