| Really stupid question from a beginner-- parts of a boat? Hi guys! It's the summer and I wanted to do something with my hands so I decided to build a really simple boat! I'm sure you've heard of the One Sheet Skiff (http://www3.sympatico.ca/herbert.mcleod/skiff.htm.) I'm doing that. But, and this is kind of embarrassing, I can't figure out how to put some of it together. A big part is that I don't know what some of the terms in the diagram/instructions. I googled "parts of a boat", but got things that either told me parts of an assembled boat, or places on a boat, not really "components" of a boat (I also tried googling components, no luck). Also, most the results were for sailboats, where they were concentrating more on the parts related to the sails. Anyway, does someone have a really simple diagram, just labeling the parts of a boat? ie, transom, gusset, chine, skeg, frame, stem? I can guess what a few of them are but I want to be careful. Thanks! |

| Google the words you're unfamiliar with. Or better yet, go to dictionary.com and search there. Edit: If the results show a lot of non-boat terms, search in the page for "boat" or "nautical"

| I don't know where a diagram is. But Glen-L has a pretty comprehensive glossary, where you can look up the terms as you run into them in the instructions or plans. http://www.glen-l.com/resources/glossary.html

| Chine This beginner just learned what a 'chine' was. I, too, have been looking at the 'one sheet skiff' The more I ponder it the more I learn. When the side boards meet the bottom plate is the "chine" I did google "chine" and didn't get much of an explanation. Oh, well, it is only one sheet of plywood and some 1X2's. I'll just have to buy more plywood after my mistakes ![]() |

Chine(s) can also be where one panel meets another in a hard-ish corner...as in multi chine. Once you get into more than a couple of panels on the side they turn into strakes and then you get a whole bunch of other terms thrown in like Garboard (Strake) and Shear Strake. It also depends on your building method to as to what a term might be for a particular part... Ain't the boaty world FUN? |
