Prop Protecting Keel

Guys, I have power boat Uniflkite 46' in fiberglass. I would like extend 3ength and depth of keel as it does not protect the props. Can I just add a wood 6-8" piece and fiberglass it in to the exisitng keel??? Props hang out by about 4"" and will strike first if I run aground. Any other suggestions+

An image or two would be helpful. You could extend the deadwood assembly or you could use a strut, maybe something that also offers rudder protection and stabilization.
