Babak,

Here is one idea that I have proposed before, but no one has ever done any research on it. What is the best geometry for lifting strakes on a powerboat hull? Most lifting strakes run the full length of the hull, but how wide should they be, and what should be their fore/aft shape and sweep. That is, the front ends of lifting strakes are generally higher than the aft end, but how high should they be? Is lower better, or is higher better? What should be the best shape in waves and in calm water? Are they the same, or should they be different? As you can see, there is a whole host of questions regarding the design of lifting strakes, and no one ever, in my research on the topic, has ever answered these questions. We merely shape the strakes by eye, never with any scientific thought.

I hope that helps. Good luck.

Eric

spray/lifting rail optimisation

I second Eric's thoughts. As you see from my title, the project may be a little wider than Eric's recommendation as I interpret lifting rails as being partially submerged while spray rails are generally above water level at operating speed.

Optimum trim angles, lateral inclination and width for both spray & lifting rails in smooth and rough water would be very illuminating.
