price of a design

What would be the price of a new design for a 44ft power boat? A range or % of toal build coast would be helpful if specifics are difficult. What would a full design package include?

You need to specify the type of craft. There's a lot of variation within the '44 foot power boat' spec.

From my experience, the design cost is a drop in the bucket compared to the build/tooling cost. Pennies to the dollar?

eyschulman ,
I will said basic design around 8% to 10% of evaluated final cost, can be much more if you ask the NA to do details/constructions drawing, in class or not, stability boocklet etc, also NA name and reputation..
ask a quote !!

The price is depending on the name of the designer

Are you sure JL Hacker designed a 30' racer? If so, what was her name?

Unfortunately, designer's time and effort are nearly the same whether or not the boat has parts made of gold or diamonds. The minimum cost of plans necessarily has to reflect this simple fact.
Cheers!

Who is gzo hacker? JL Hacker is the famous designer from the early 1900's. I asked what was the boat's name of 30' length.

Are you interested in a specific boat designed by John L Hacker, or are you using the term "hacker" to mean a more generic type of craft?

If you want a quality design including all the construction plans and details, hydrostatics, stability, weight study, and powering/propeller calculations, etc., I generally figure about $1,000 per foot of boat length, give or take. It depends on the project and how detailed the plans have to be. A professional boatbuilder will require less detailed plans than a do-it-yourselfer. So the 44' semi-displacement boat would cost around $44K to $50K. The 30' Hacker look-alike will be in the neighborhood of $30K. These prices are colored by the naval architect's/designer's reputation--more well-known n.a./designers will charge more and maybe provide less documentation, or not--designers vary. You should shop around. Ask several designers for proposals based on a well-assembled owner's package that you can provide, and see what they say. This will also give you a chance to talk to the designers first-hand and help you gauge how well they answer your questions and how you might like dealing with them. In the end, commissioning a design is as much a personality test to see how you and the designer get along as it a test of your wallet.

Eric

Yes, it all depends! But being prepared with sketches, specifications, examples can shorten the guessing game and the cost for plans.
