Pleasure Barge Considering the design of a Pleasure Barge, what do you call the upper part that provides shade for the people on deck ?? It is not a canopy or awning since it is rigid, but may not necessarily be an upper deck. So what's it called ?? Thanks. ALA

| Can you show us a pic to explain exactly which bit of the boat you mean? Often a rigid bimini style of arrangement is simply called a hardtop. That poking out over a cockpit is usually referred to as the overhang....

I don't think that thing has a name, if you mean a pontoon boat roof. We can make one up. How about "canopimini"? Beats "That thing up there above that hides the sky". A.

Oh, a (floating) place for drinking, gamblimg, and entertaining ladies of ill repute. Check out sites that show Mississippi paddle-wheelers, construction drawings. I think there IS a name for that thing. alan

Try the term canopy or weather awning , if it is walkable it is a "Texas deck". In reality, what you are asking about and showed is a weather awning or canopy, on smaller boats it can be refered to as a surry top. The fact is it is now rigid does not change that fact that originaly they were of canvas over batten construction. The original reason for them was to protect the passangers from soot and cinders of the early steam engines, similar to early railroad carriages.

Alan , Agreed ! That "roof" cannot be glamourized into anything else but a "roof"
