I thought I had to post this just because it is of a "FowardWheelHouse/open aft deck"......

a configuration not included in Apex's two choices of an 'aft wheelhouse, open fore deck' or a "GentleMan's Trawler"


How about adding some stout tarps or tents on the aft deck instead of hard structure? I wouldn't be going out in too bad of weather.

Just because it is a US Govt "buy back" and can't be used to fish in US waters, does somehow mean it can't be used to fish elsewhere?

What about 'private' or 'casual' fishing? what are the limits for that? same as any regular boat?

This is a project boat. This will take work, but it is sure worth it. This is a sea worthy boat from the fishing industry. It is a buy back boat, so it cannot be used in the fishing or shrimping industry in the US.

Photos: the first three are how the boat is now. The fourth one is the way we wanted to make her. We must give her up before we can see this project to fruition.

A bit unfair don´t you think? There are 8 different styles to choose from, including this one!

And the advertised vessel is sure not a bargain!
"A bit elbow grease and a few thousand $$$" are not even enough to paint it!

And apart from any cost of conversion, it will be as expensive to keep and maintain it as a brandnew boat of similar displacement! A always forgotten factor with such hulks.

The salvage value is more than $15k, but how much to transport it somewhere and cut it apart.

after spending a few hundred thousand dollars for the conversion, the maintenance, insurance and all that will around forty grants a years.

the cheapo is not accepted at that size, you enter the large yacht category, with all the money that come with it.

as a long term non-fishing live aboard: More wave pounding in living quarters.

But it also might be best for just goofing around in mild weather, open air dinner parties, etc.

As I stated above, ALL, absolutely ALL running cost and maintenance expenses are equal to a glitz, blitz bells and whistles newbuild of same displacement. There is one single exemption: the paintwork is less costly than for a yacht with piano finish (which is not found on the Passagemakers we are actually talking). And that argument does not bite here.

You can find similar objects in every port worldwide. One dreamer has made a "bargain" when they went out of service. He then sunk all his families savings in a senseless attempt to make something useful out of it. After many frustrating years he was bancrupt and the craft was on the market again. Now at a much higher price, due to the sunken amount of money. After years and several "dives" due to frozen seacocks and the like, it was sold or given to the next dreamer, sinking the next fortune in it. A endless and never successful story.

I know of several of them, one could have build a village for the wasted money.

Though there are some rare examples of successful conversions, no doubt.

But in these cases the people involved were professionals, well aware that they are dealing with a newbuild process, having only the advantage (and disadvantage) of a sturdy and sound hull and propulsion.

These (very rare, as mentioned) successful conversions have ALL been executed far below yacht standards to stay within at least a plausible budget. If the conversion was done to real yacht standards, they ended up at nearly (or above) twice the cost of a complete newbuild.

That are the cruel facts behind such hulk. Not the dream of having a big boat for small money!
